As her Uber made its way into the private vehicle lane, a group of cab drivers initiated a disruptive uproar. To her shock, they even attempted to damage her car. Regrettably, Shah’s experience is not an isolated case.

Persistent Congestion

Although authorities have made efforts to alleviate the encroachments around Thane station, congestion in the area remains a persistent challenge. This predicament is a source of frequent lament for Thane’s residents. Rajesh Khernar, a Rabodi resident, shared an incident, recalling, “Just last week, I had to endure over an hour’s wait for an auto, as none were willing to take me. They either quoted exorbitant prices far above the meter or outright refused to go.”

A Challenge for Commuters

Traffic police’s attempts to mitigate the situation often encounter resistance from auto drivers who, according to residents, manage to identify a blind spot. As Ajay Kumar, a resident of Majiwada, explains, “The traffic police are stationed near the exit, but the autorickshaws exclusively occupy the station’s entrance. They don’t even approach the designated meter stand, as it would require them to accept even shorter rides.” Private vehicle owners face their own dilemmas, as pointed out by Trupti Dhore, a Brahmand resident: “The far-right lane is designated for private vehicles, but it’s often occupied by cabs and some auto drivers. Attempting to briefly park to unload luggage for just five minutes leads to confrontations, while these vehicles remain stationed throughout the day.”

The Ola and Uber Dilemma

Further complicating matters is the conundrum surrounding Ola and Uber services at Thane station. Commuters are vocal in their complaints about restrictions placed on these app-based services, claiming they are prohibited from picking up passengers in close proximity to the station. As a result, travelers often find themselves compelled to trek 50 to 100 meters for their rides.
