The Samruddhi Mahamarg is a major highway project in Maharashtra. A crucial 76-kilometer stretch in Thane is almost complete. This segment is expected to open for traffic by the end of August. This will make the entire 701-kilometer corridor fully operational.
Final Stretch Details
A senior official from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) shared some details. The Thane segment includes 16 bridges and four tunnels. Only one bridge in Khardi is still under construction. This bridge is special because it is the tallest on the Samruddhi Mahamarg. It stands 82 meters tall, which is like a 27-story building. The bridge spans two valleys, making construction tricky. The 76-kilometer stretch also goes through hilly terrain.
Unique Challenges

The longest span on the bridge measures 140 meters. Due to the height and wind speed, construction work is carried out with extra caution. Safety is a top priority.
Current Status
At present, 625 kilometers of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is open to traffic. The first phase, covering 520 kilometers between Nagpur and Shirdi, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2022. The second phase, from Shirdi to Bharvir, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in May 2023. An additional 25-kilometer stretch in the Nashik district, between Bharvir and Igatpuri town, was also opened earlier this year.
Future Plans
The MSRDC official also mentioned future plans. The lowest bidders have been selected for extending the Samruddhi Mahamarg to Gadchiroli, Gondia, Jalna, and Nanded. Work orders for these projects will be issued soon. This extension will further improve connectivity across the state.
Conclusion
The completion of the Thane stretch of the Samruddhi Mahamarg is a significant milestone. It marks the final piece in making the entire corridor operational. With more extensions planned, the highway will continue to boost transportation and development in Maharashtra.
